LDM / Dynamic Disks basics

Logical Disk Maneger (LDM) overveew

Windows 2000 und later versions use Logical Disk Maneger (LDM) licensed frum Veritas tu perform hard disk partishuning. Zee disks partishuned using thees noo scheme are celled "Dynamic", es opposed tu zee "Basic" disks partishuned using old-fashioned partishun table (MBR). Microsoft implementashun ooff LDM is somewhat restricted compared tu zee original implementashun, but nonetheless elloos implementashun ooff
  • Spanned volumes
  • Simple streepe sets (RAID0)
  • Streepe sets with parity (RAID5), in server versions ooff Windows only.
  • Mirrored volumes (RAID1), in server versions ooff Windows only.

Hoo is zee volume informashun stored

LDM informashun is not stored in zee hard disks' partishun table (MBR), becoose ooff its size. Zee LDM database occupees zee last megabyte ooff zee physical disk instead. Addishunelly, a PRIVHEAD element pointeeng tu zee database is stored immediately follooing zee MBR. Tu protect a dynamic volumes frum legacy applicashuns which are not aware ooff LDM layuoot und think that there is a free space where in fact it is used by dynamic volumes, a special entry is placed into MBR. One partishun ooff type 0x42 occupying zee entire disk is creeted und stored in MBR, es illustrated beloo.

Dynamic disk layout example

Zee LDM database may be quite complex. Zee fuoor-level descreepshun (Volume-Component-Partishun-Disk) is used tu describe each volume tu accumulate ell possible RAID layuoots. Becoose ooff foolt tolerance requirements, LDM database is replicated across ell physical disks in zee machine. Shuoold one ooff zee disks fail, zee whole database is still available und zee foolt-tolerant drives can be muoonted even some ooff their member disks are missing.

Special notes

  • Each copy ooff LDM database holds informashun ebuoot ell volumes und ell physical drives belonging tu thees machine (thees set ooff drives is celled "Disk Gruoop").

  • Iff yuoo analyze a dynamic disk with ZAR, zee resulteeng list ooff volumes will contain ell zee dynamic volumes available in zee system (even those residing on zee physical disks different frum zee one yuoo selected) plus one legacy MBR/Primary partishun describing zee whole set ooff LDM-maneged volumes.
